Bermuda is the world’s largest captive insurance market and a center of the property catastrophe reinsurance business. Much of that work happens in Hamilton, where the offices along Pitts Bay Road deal constantly with brokers and investors in Manhattan. The leisure travel goes mostly in the opposite direction: New Yorkers fly down for long weekends on the island’s beaches.

Few charter aircraft are based in Bermuda. Most fly in from the U.S. mainland, so a one-way trip that starts on the island can include the cost of positioning the aircraft there. Bermuda and U.S. passenger fees and ground handling are charged on top. Flights to New York usually head into the wind and take a longer time in each range; the trip south is usually quicker.
Best Private Jet Airports in Hamilton and New York
Hamilton
L.F. Wade International Airport (BDA): about 7 miles northeast of Hamilton on St. David’s Island, 9,705-ft runway, handles any aircraft size, Atlantic Aviation FBO open 24 hours, jet fuel only, the only airport in Bermuda
There is no second airport on the island, so all private flights use L.F. Wade.
New York
Teterboro Airport (TEB): 12 miles north-northwest of Midtown Manhattan, 7,000-ft runway, private and corporate aircraft only, 100,000-lb weight limit, U.S. Customs from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., preferred arrival for this route
Westchester County Airport (HPN): about 30 miles north of Midtown in White Plains, 6,549-ft runway, U.S. Customs on site, overnight noise restrictions, best for Westchester, Greenwich, and Fairfield County
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK): 15 miles southeast of Manhattan in Queens, longest runway more than 14,000 ft, any aircraft size, best for the heaviest jets or connections to international airline flights
Private Jets for Charter Flights between Hamilton & New York
Turboprops
Turboprops on this route are twin-engine models such as the King Air 350. FAA charter rules don’t allow a single-engine aircraft carrying passengers to fly beyond gliding distance of land, so the Pilatus PC-12NG can’t make this crossing of about 680 nautical miles. Because the flight is a long overwater leg, the operator must carry life rafts and survival equipment.
Light Jets
A light jet suits two to five passengers with carry-on bags and a few suitcases. For a Hamilton executive making a day trip to Manhattan, it’s usually the least expensive jet. A family flying home with golf bags will need more baggage room than a light jet has.
Midsize Jets
Midsize jets seat seven to nine passengers in a cabin with room to move around. They have an enclosed lavatory and hold more luggage than a light jet. On this flight, a deal team has space to spread out papers and work. They can use any of the New York airports listed above.
Super Midsize Jets
Super midsize jets have a stand-up cabin and a large baggage hold, and most have Wi-Fi. Families leaving Bermuda after a week on the island often choose one for the luggage space, and executives use them to work for the full flight. The flight takes about as long as in a midsize jet, but there’s noticeably more room.
Heavy Jets
A heavy jet seats up to 16 passengers. The cabin can be divided into separate zones, and there’s a full galley with a flight attendant on board. Bermuda-based operator Longtail Aviation flies Falcon 900s, so some heavy-jet trips can start on the island instead of from the U.S. mainland. Most heavy jets can land at Teterboro within its 100,000-lb weight limit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I clear U.S. customs in Bermuda before a private flight to New York?
No. The U.S. preclearance facility at L.F. Wade serves scheduled airline passengers only; for private and charter flights, preclearance is currently available only at Shannon and Aruba. On a private jet, you clear U.S. Customs after landing at an airport of entry such as Teterboro, Westchester, or JFK. Teterboro’s customs officers work from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., so a late departure from Bermuda may need to go to another airport.
What documents do I need to fly into Bermuda?
You need a valid passport and proof of return or onward travel, and you must complete the free Bermuda Arrival Card before landing. U.S., U.K., and Canadian citizens don’t need a visa. Travelers of other nationalities may need a multiple-entry visa for the U.S., U.K., or Canada, valid for 45 days beyond their departure from Bermuda, and their passport must be valid for the same period. U.S. passport cards aren’t accepted for air travel to Bermuda.
Should I fly into Teterboro or Westchester?
Teterboro is closer to Manhattan and northern New Jersey and handles only private and business aircraft. Westchester is closer to Greenwich, Stamford, and the Hudson Valley. You can clear U.S. Customs on arrival at either one.
